Death of a Child Brings Mental Health Problems

According to a recent study from the New England Journal of Medicine, parents who experience the loss of a child have a 67% higher risk of hospitalization for mental illness than other parents. The figure remains significant even after five years from the death of the child.

While the death of a child is considered among the most difficult of human experiences, there are relatively few support systems in place for parents to cope with the loss. Without the help of a counselor, doctor, or support group, individuals may try to avoid dealing with their grief and consequently increase their likelihood of hospitalization.
