The state of the nation's public mental health system

The main source of care for most Americans suffering from serious mental illness deserves a D grade. In a state-by-state analysis released earlier this year, no state was awarded an A, only five states received B grades and eight states received failing grades. Correctional facilities, indigent care systems, emergency medicine and homeless service providers are forced to offer mental health services when the system falls short. Medicaid is the largest single payer of public mental health services; many states have cut mental health services in recent years because of budget shortfalls.
