Understanding PTSD from the Brains Perspective

A recent study at New York University found that the proximity of an individual to
a traumatic event related to the distinctness of their memory of the event and the part of the brain which was activated by the traumatic event. The study was based on the experiences of individuals who were exposed to the September 11th tragedy and identified their position in relation to the twin towers collapse as close or more distant. As memory is an important component of our thinking and feeling capacities this study serves to highlight that traumatic memories may be shared by a number of people and the recall of specific vivid images may relate to the neurological aspects of memory storage and later retrieval. The acuity and detail of memory may in fact relate to which part of the brain responded to the stimuli and began the process of coding, cataloging and storage of the image.
