Why We Drink

We've all seen it in the movies. Someones had a bad day and they end it at the local pub. However, a survey now shows that binge drinking, especially among women, is linked to depression. The survey showed that the relationship among men was weak and also for depressed "feelings" rather than clinical depression.

6,009 men and 8,054 women between the ages of 18 and 76 were surveyed by telephone interviews to determine the frequency, usual and maximum quantity per occasion, volume, and heavy episodic drinking of alcohol consumption during the week and the year. They were also questioned on their symptoms.

"For alcohol consumption, the results are clear: the main factor linking depression with alcohol consumption is consuming larger amounts per occasion," Dr. Kathryn Graham, Ph.D said.
