Alcohol Abuse and the Workplace

A study from George Washington University revealed the top 12 work environments for alcohol abuse:
1. Hospitality
2. Construction
3. Wholesale Trade
4 Retail Trade
5. Finance and Real Estate
6. Manufacturing
7. Transportation/Utilities
8. Information/Communication
9. Agriculture
10. Other Services
11. Education/Social Services
12. Public Administration

The list is broad and inconclusive, identifying many workplace environments in which the risk is elevated. Certainly, there are other factors to consider such as, age and gender of the workers. The reality is that alcohol is a health problem for workers across the board and a high cost problem for employers. We need to look beyond the list and to the issues which cause people to drink for the real solutions.
