"Cognitive-communicative skills after traumatic brain injury"

Synopsis:

Dr. Davis' program discussed the types of cognitive- communicative disorders occurring after brain injury and the ways in which those disorders impact an individual’s interaction in functional contexts. The presentation also discussed the role of the speech-language pathologist in a team approach to rehabilitation and methods of assessment and intervention. Strategies for other rehabilitation professionals to use when working with these individuals were a focal point of Dr. Davis' presentation..

Goals:

1. Define cognitive-communicative disorders
2. Discuss the role of the speech-language pathologist in rehabilitation of individuals after brain injury as a member of an interdisciplinary team
3. Describe the areas of difficulty in cognitive communicative skills in adults following brain injury
4. Explain and describe strategies for facilitating communication with individuals with deficits after brain injury
5. Review methods or instruments for assessment of individuals with cognitive-communicative deficits after brain injury
6. Discuss difficulties in social interaction and community reintegration that individuals with cognitive-communicative deficits after brain injury may encounter
7. Apply the strategies for facilitating cognitive-communicative skills in individuals after brain injury to participants’ daily work activities and role as a team member.

Speaker Profile



Lori Davis, Ed. D.

Lori Davis, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Tulsa. She has taught at the university level since 1999. She is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist in practice since 1992. Her specialization is in adult neurogenic disorders and medical speech-language pathology. She has worked in adult rehabilitation in long-term care, hospital acute-care, and home health settings since 1992. She is currently on staff at St. John Home Health and for Valir Rehabilitation. She also directs the Cleft Palate Team at the University of Tulsa, and she has published in the areas of patient education, dysphagia, aging, quality of life, and dementia.
