Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots “Suicide Attempts Following Traumatic Brain Injury: Identifying and Managing Risks” Presenter: Rolf Gainer, PhD ABDA Date: April 2, 2008 Synopsis: Depression, cognitive deficits, and impulsive behaviors are just some of the factors that place TBI survivors at an elevated risk for suicide. Individuals with TBI often have limited access to mental health services, and only a few of those programs provide expertise in dealing with TBI populations. Additionally, Suicidal patients in rehabilitation settings create many challenges for clinicians and rehabilitation staff and community reintegration plans are often accompanied by an increased risk for suicidal ideation and attempts as they confront the issues of a lifelong disability. Dr. Rolf Gainer’s presentation, “Suicide Attempts Following Traumatic Brain Injury: Identifying and Managing Risks,” addressed issues related to suicide among TBI survivors, assessment tools and methods, and proper response to suicidal behaviors in rehab settings.
