Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots “Chemical Dependency: Why Don't They Just Stop?” Presenter: Faith Sellen, Ph.D. Date: July 2nd 2008 Synopsis: Thursday, July 2nd 2008, therapists and area professionals throughout Oklahoma came to hear Dr. Faith Sellen present on the topic of chemical dependency, which she entitled “Chemical Dependency: Why Don't They Just Stop?” Attendees were confronted with a variety of different issues surrounding chemical dependency and shown several models for successfully engaging CD patients in therapy. Issues surrounding chemical dependency that were discussed were chosen behaviors, gradual emergence, continuum of severity, and temporary gratification of basic human needs, among others. In the context of therapy Dr. Sellen discussed motivation interviewing techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, and contingency management. Dr. Sellen's only regret about the seminar was that she could have used more time to fit everything in. The presentation was jam packed full of useful information. After the seminar many of the attendees stayed to ask questions and discuss the topic further. The seminar was a resounding success.
