Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots

"The Response of Astrocytes to Spinal Injury & Methylprednisolone Treatment"

Presenter: Kenneth E. Miller

Date: September 6, 2006

Synopsis:

Following injury, the spinal cord undergoes a period of acute shock followed by a series of chronic alterations in response to the insult. Our laboratory is evaluating these alterations in a rodent model of spinal injury with and without methylprednisolone treatment.

We have three interests:

  1. What is the biochemical make-up of the glial scar at the injury site?
  2. What happens to the intimate glutamine/glutamate relationship between astrocytes and neurons?
  3. Does injury cause the appearance of stem cells or immature cells in the spinal cord?

The goals of this seminar:

  • Provide overview of current status of spinal injury and treatment
  • Describe research from laboratory about spinal injury and treatment
  • Discuss future of treatment for spinal cord injury
