"Ethical Perspectives on Counseling Multicultural Populations"

Presenter: Dorothy Millican-Wynn, Ph.D

Synopsis:

Dr. Wynn's presentation focused on ethical perspectives mental health professionals have to come to terms with; it is their moral and professional responsibility to become aware of biases, sterotypes, and assumptions that underlay their practice, and to become aware of cultural differences in different client populations, and to develop appropriate intervention strategies which take into account social, cultural, historical, and environmental influences of culturally different clients.

 

Speaker Profile



Dorothy Millican-Wynn, Ph.D

Dr. Millican-Wynn graduated from the University of Oklahoma's Counseling Psychology Program. She is a licensed psychologist. She completed an APA Internship at Children's Medical Center in Tulsa and worked two years inpatient at Shadow Mountain Hospital in long term residential care and the children's hospital. She has also worked with adult and adolescent inpatient populations at Hillcrest Hospital. She later worked at the Family and Children's Services Family Sexual Abuse Treatment Program while beginning her private practice. She was in full time private practicum from July 1988 until July 2005. She took an assistant teaching position with Northeastern State University in their Counseling Psychology Department and continued a small private practice. She currently maintains a small private practice, consults and supervises other therapists, and works as a medical consultant for Developmental Disability Services which is a division for The Department of Rehabilitative Services.
Prior to obtaining her doctorate degree she worked at Cleveland County Guidance Center as a therapist to parents and children, prior to completing her masters degree she worked for Court Related and Community Services as a juvenile probation and parole counselor.
