Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots

"Recovering from Grief: Therapeutic Interventions"

Presenter: by Angela Linger, LPC

Date: December 2nd 2009

Synopsis:

Grief is a conflicting group of human emotions caused by an "end to" or "change in" familiar patterns of behavior. Grief recovery in layman's terms is to "acknowledge that it is perfectly alright to feel sad from time to time and to talk about those feelings no matter how those around your react." Likewise, recovery is being able to recall fond memories without having them precipitate painful feelings of regret or remorse; this often takes work. Unhealthy grieving can be an emotionally crippling experience, which can transcend to societal ills as well. In 2003 the Grief Index Study conducted by the Grief Institute found that 75.1 billion dollars were lost in productivity due to grief over loss. During her presentation, Angela will talk about therapeutic interventions, STERBS, the difference between mourning and grieving, and what a healthy response to loss can look like.
