Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots "Managing Behaviors of Dementia Patients" Presenter: by Elise White, RN Date: January 6th 2010 Synopsis: Dementia is a disease that affects not just the victim, but also family, friends and caregivers. Taking care of a loved one or patient with dementia can be a difficult, stressful and tiring job; it can affect the caregiver's health and ability to rest and can be a source of stress and conflict for all involved, especially the patient. During her presentation, Elise White, Program Director of Transitions at Cushing Regional Hospital, discussed both internal and external factors that contribute to behavior changes in this population. Additionally, non-pharmaceutical approaches to common behavioral challenges that promote safety, dignity and positive outcomes for the dementia patient as well as the health care provider were discussed. Elise's presentation provided a practical guide for health care professionals desiring to learn more about managing challenging behaviors of dementia patients. As evidenced by participant responses, her presentation was an overwhelming success.
