Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots

"The Issues of Aging"

Presenter: Judith K. Adams, Ph.D.

Date: June 6, 2007

Synopsis:

Dr. Adams' presentation provided an overview of issues of aging, using a holistic approach to the subject. Her presentation considered physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and general legal issues which are part of the aging process. After illustrations and brief audience participation, Dr. Adams discussed the continuum of aging, variations in the aging process, and transitions faced over the course of life. Several theories of aging were identified and strategies for coping with the aging process were also identified. The session encouraged participants to apply knowledge of the aging process as service providers, community and family members, and as individuals who also face the aging process. Clinical issues related to aging which may arise in providing services to persons who are aging were also identified by Dr. Adams.

Goals:

1. Develop a "whole person" concept of aging.
2. Recognize the continuum of aging
3. Improve empathy and understanding for the aging process
4. Be aware of transitions faced by persons who are aging
5. Obtain fundamental understandings which can be applied in a variety of settings.
