According to recent findings daily binge drinking greatly increases the risk for fatal hemorrhagic strokes. Specifically, men who consumed at least six drinks a day were more than three times as likely to suffer a lethal brain hemorrhage. The study was composed of a cohort of 6,000 participants. Men who admitted to drinking six or more alcoholic beverages a day had an adjusted hazard ratio for death and stroke of 3.39 (95% CI 1.38 to 8.35) as compared to non-drinkers. Over 20% of the study’s participants told the researchers that they consumed more than six drinks a day. Occasional binge drinking, however, was not associated with increased risk for hemorrhagic stroke. Click here to read an article from Medpage Today that discusses the study more.
