About Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that typically appears after exposure to a terrifying event during which injury occurred or was threatened. Events that can trigger PTSD include: violent attacks such as rape or mugging, exposure to physical, sexual, or psychological abuse, natural disasters, automobile accidents, or military combat. PTSD can be extremely disabling and grows progressively worse if left untreated. While post-traumatic stress disorder often occurs in members of the military or law enforcement, victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are also at risk to develop PTSD. Even family members of victims can develop PTSD. Traumatic events are a horrible reality for many people, and they require professional help in order to effectively process the event.
