Eating disorders are a major problem affecting all socioeconomic groups and a widening age range. In the United States alone eating disorders are estimated to effect up to 11 million people. A practical guide for mental health professionals who are interested in learning more about treating adults with eating disorders, Sherry’s presentation defined the three types of eating disorders, discussed the prevalence of each, and reviewed potential causes. Additionally, clinical interventions that promote therapeutic alliance, instill hope, increase mindfulness, challenge thought distortions, improve body image, establish healthy boundaries with self and others, and build support were presented.
