Seminar Date: June 7, 2010
Presented by: Mary Young, LPC
In the past 20 years the medical community has embraced a more holistic approach to treating pain using relaxation methods like diaphragmatic breathing, visual imagery, and stress management. CBT also has become an effective way to help chronic pain sufferers restructure their thinking to achieve the goal of relaxation and stress management, which has proven to be essential in managing chronic pain more effectively. Mary’s presentation served as a guide for mental health professionals who desired to learn more about how to support individuals who suffer from chronic pain. Current pain theories, treatments and the mind-body connection were discussed as well as the iatrogenic effects of drug therapy and the need to develop safer therapeutic methods.
